Are the Freemasons related to the Illuminati?

Conspiracy theories have always been popular in fiction, movies and television with many attempts at linking Freemasonry with ruling the world or suggesting the Illuminati and Freemasons were one in the same. Wikipedia has a great page on this and clearly explains that the Illuminati started in Bavaria (Germany) by Adam Weishaupt.  After Weishaupt’s Order of Illuminati was banned and its members dispersed (Weishaupt fled Bavaria to live in exile), the order left behind no enduring traces of an influence, not even on its own former members, who went on in the future to develop in quite different directions.

To some degree, speculation and paranoia grew out of the Freemasons’ influence in the United States. Many Founding Fathers were members, after all. And some key American symbols may have been derived from the Freemasons.

Popular among conspiracy theorists is the claim that the  Eye of Providence shown atop an unfinished pyramid on the Great Seal of the United States indicates the influence of Freemasonry in the founding of the United States. However, common Masonic use of the Eye dates to 14 years after the creation of the Great Seal. Furthermore, among the members of the various design committees for the Great Seal, only Benjamin Franklin was a Mason (and his ideas for the seal were not adopted). Indeed, many Masonic organizations have explicitly denied any connection to the creation of the Seal
